History of H.E. Sever Memorial Library Service
The first Kahoka Library was established in 1893. It was located on the east side of the square on the second floor of the Strickler Building. The library was opened January 1894.
In 1940 the city of Kahoka and Clark County agreed to assist in the financial support of the growing library. In 1941 a bequest was received from H.E. Sever a former principal of the Kahoka public school of $110,000 for the erection of a library building with the provision that the city pass a sufficient tax to support it. In 1942 the city voted a two mill tax for library services.
In 1946 a librarian was hired and books were distributed around the county. In 1961 realizing the benefits of cooperation and sharing of resources a regional library was formed and entitled The Northeast Missouri Library Services.
The headquarters is housed in Kahoka and the H.E. Sever Memorial Library became a branch of the regional. Counties included at that time were Clark, Lewis, Knox and Schuyler.
The bookmobile continued to serve all four counties until early 1980’s when it was replaced with a van that now services book deposits. The Northeast Missouri Library Services now covers three counties with Schuyler County going out on its own in 1999/2000. The four branches are located in Kahoka, Edina, LaBelle and LaGrange.
